Knitting Tech: Achieving a Professional Finish

1 x 5.5 hr Session

Class Length: 1 session of 5.5 hours, including a half hour lunch break*
Number in Class: 6
Entry Level: You will need to have moderate knitting experience. This means you must know how to knit, purl, cast on and off confidently. You will also be required to complete some knitting homework for the class which requires you to follow a basic pattern, so you will also need experience following a pattern, increasing and decreasing.
Materials: Not included. Please see materials list below.
Tutor: Christine Brown
NB. There is some homework to do before the class! You will need to knit four small pieces for which you will be emailed a pattern.
You will need to bring a packed lunch, or you can buy some lunch from The Larder here on the Burwash site.

After taking the time and trouble to knit a garment many of us then struggle when it comes to the sewing up and finishing, and yet it is this which distinguishes between the garment being home-made and hand-made.

On this course you will be shown techniques which will make the finishing of your knitted pieces so much more enjoyable. No more throwing them in the back of the wardrobe because the sewing up doesn’t look right!

You will learn how to sew knitted fabrics together, how to make buttonholes and how to sew stripes so they absolutely match. We will cover a three needle cast off, grafting, picking up stitches evenly, wrap and turn shaping, pressing and blocking. If there’s time, different methods of casting on and casting off will be covered.

During this class you will finish your homework pieces into a miniature jumper to fit a teddy bear. You will also be required to do some additional knitting.

Materials required:
DK yarn in two colours (a good quality yarn is best e.g. wool, wool cotton or wool acrylic mix) this is used to knit up your homework panels. Please bring spare of the same yarn to class for making up the jumper.
Further DK yarn for additional knitting in class.
