I have had ‘Sparkly Jacket’ on my Make Nine list since the beginning of 2020. It didn’t happen in that first year so in 2021 it just had to come into being. Rarely do the fabric and the pattern for a project come together at the same time, and in this case the fabric came first and it took me a long time to settle on the Nova (previously known as the Sapporo) Jacket from Papercut as the pattern.

I had snaffled for myself some sparkly jacquard fabric from Atelier Brunette yonks ago and have had it in my stash all this time, destined for a jacket of the partying kind. We’ve not really been able to do much partying of late, but I think I might bust this one out for a park bench mulled wine, or a cautious Christmas do.

The Nova is a really popular pattern and for good reason. The cocoon shape and stylish angled pockets are dreamy and in this latest issue from Papercut there is a more cropped version along with the longer original one.
So, I went for cropped in length but long on the sleeve, and fully lined in a Ruby Star Society quilting cotton that has also been sitting in my stash for some time. Apologies that both of these fabrics are now out of stock.  Quilting cotton is a no brainer as jacket lining in my opinion.  Why would you make your own jacket and not give it a jazzy lining?

The jacket came together well. I binge made it in about three days and found it fairly easy to construct. There were a couple of head scratching moments but nothing I found too perplexing. I made it a size smaller than I measured after reading that it was generous in sizing and I think that was a good decision.

The jacket has no fastenings which is a little odd, so you just have to hug it around yourself if it’s chilly. You could put a few frogs on it if you wanted, that would look rather nice, but I think I’ll leave it for the moment.
I’d really like to make another Nova. Definitely in something more woolly and warm, perhaps this Ochre Softcoat that has just come in. But for now, I’m just chuffed as that the sparkly jacket is ready to party!
