Class Length: Classes are 3 hours long
Number in Class: 6 maximum
Entry Level: Improving Beginner.  You will need to be fairly confident using a sewing machine and have a couple of projects under your belt. Some patchwork/ quilting experience is helpful but not required.
Materials: Not Included: Students will need to bring fabric and thread from home or buy from the shop. Please see materials list.
Tutor: Clare Collier

This class is an introduction to foundation paper piecing, using the simple yet striking gemology block.

The technique involves machine stitching fabrics to a paper template to create complex and detailed shapes. The paper pieces are later removed. The technique is great if you don’t enjoy accurate cutting, and can be a great stash buster too.

While sometimes quite tricky to master, our tutor will guide you through the process and by the end of the class there will be no stopping you!

Students will be talked through the construction of the block, and will get practise sewing one or two up.  Guidance will be given to then replicate this block at home if you want to create a larger quilt top.

Students are welcome to either bring their own machines (bring your manual too!) or use the Backstitch machines for free.

All classes are taught from our bright retail premises at Burwash Manor just outside Cambridge, and tea and biscuits are included!

Materials List:
If you just want to make practise blocks:
- Coordinating fabric scraps in solids or non-directional prints (this is essential!): You will need scraps no smaller than 15cm by 20cm.  You will need 8 scraps per block.
- 1 background fabric – 1 fat quarter per block
- Thread suitable for piecing, in a grey that matches the tone of your fabrics (light, medium or dark). We recommend Aurifil 50wt

Or, if you want to repeat the block to make the full quilt top then:
- 8 coordinating fabrics in solids or non-directional prints: 8 fat quarters
- 1 background fabric - 1.5m to 2 m
- Thread suitable for piecing, in a grey that matches the tone of your fabrics (light, medium or dark). We recommend Aurifil 50wt

If you would like to buy these items from the shop we are happy to help you choose although you may want to pop in before the day of the class as choosing fabric can take some time!!

Please be aware that we need two students enrolled on the class otherwise it is subject to cancellation.  By purchasing this class you are agreeing to our class policy.
