Knitting Technique: Double Knitting

1 x 3hr Session

Class Length: Classes are 3 hours long
Number in Class: 6
Entry Level: This class is for confident knitters used to knitting in the round using double pointed needles.
Materials: Not included. Please see materials list below.
Tutor: Christine Brown

In this class you will learn the double knitting technique. Double knitting is a form of hand knitting in which two strands of yarn are knitted simultaneously on one pair of needles, to give a double-sided fabric which is stocking stitch on both sides. It can be in one or two colours and is most frequently made by knitting in the round (it can be done on straight needles but it is a lot more difficult to read the charts). The fabrics are inseparable, as in interlock knitted fabrics.

During this class you will be shown the different ways to cast on and cast off (they are very different to normal), as well as how to work the main body of the fabric, again very different to normal knitting.

Once you have mastered the double knitting technique you will be able to create elaborate, two-colour, reversible designs. This type of knitting is especially useful for knitting snoods and scarves.

Materials required (to be brought along or bought on the day):
2 colours of contrasting double knitting yarn (not black or dark brown);
A set of 4mm double pointed needles;
A pair of 4 mm straight needles
